The Hyundai Sonata is a mid-size sedan built by the Hyundai Motor Company since model year 1988, and marketed globally. The Sonata has since evolved through four generations and several intermediate restylings — with the current version classified as a large car, per the EPA size standards.

The name Sonata derives from the musical term for a composition featuring one or more solo instruments. The same vehicle is marketed in Italy as the Sonica.

Hyundai facelifted the Sonata for the 2008 model year, marketing the revised model as the Hyundai Sonata Transform in Korea, and debuting the model elsewhere as a 2009 model.

Revisions include a redesigned front fascia, taillights, interior, and wheels. Two powertrains are available: 2.4L 175hp(168hp with PZEV) Theta II and 3.3L 249hp Lambda V6. The fuel efficiency of the Sonata is now top of the epa class at 22/32 for the I4 and 19/29 for the V6. Both engines are newly available with a manual shift five speed automatic transmission marketed as "Shiftronic."

The redesigned Sonata features a smaller grille, new headlights, new wheel cover designs and feaux wood-trim on the steering wheel, shift gear, front passenger door panels and passenger glove box. Redesigned gauges feature a blue backlight, and the center stack of the instrument panel features chrome accents — including for the the firt time an optional touch-screen DVD-based navigation system bundled with satellite radio. Bluetooth capability is available as an optional unit, separate from the audio or navigation system, and all models include both a USB port along with an auxiliary input jack. A combination adaptor cord allows integration of an Apple Ipod.
